In February 2003, the Town of Apex purchased this boat for the Fire Department to use for surface-based water rescue/recovery operations. Our district and surrounding areas contain dozens of bodies of water, from small farm ponds and retention basins to large recreational lakes including Harris and Jordan. The potential for water-related emergencies is ever-increasing along with our population, prompting the Town Manager to approve this very much-needed purchase.
The boat is a 16-foot modified v-hull aluminum double-wide with a 25 horsepower Yamaha motor. As of May 2003, work is nearly completed. The boat has been painted and lettered, lights hooked up, carpeting installed, and we've equipped it with swiftwater universal PFDs and water rescue helmets in accordance with NC Fire Commission's Water Rescue Plan. It's even already run its first call!
