In 1958, the by-laws were amended to specify a 3-year term for chief officers. Also, the fire district was split into a Town and a Rural district with an Assistant Chief assigned to each.

Starting in 1993, the Apex Volunteer Fire Department made the Fire Chief a paid position. In 19??, the Town of Apex took over payroll and the paid staff became town employees.
