Memorial Service at Apex Fire Department

Members of the Apex Fire Department paid tribute to their fallen brothers of FDNY Wednesday morning with a memorial service in front of Station 1. At 08:48 the station flag was lowered to half-mast, and one bell tone was struck for the first tower being hit. At 09:00 two bell tones were struck for the Pentagon being hit. At 09:03, three bell tones were struck for the second tower being hit. Four bell tones were struck for the United Airlines flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. A moment of silence was then observed in honor of all victims of the attacks.

Attention was called to the memorial bench where the names of the 343 FDNY firefighters were displayed. Kim Matthews read "What Is A Fireman?", and Bert Goodman read the history of the signal 5-5-5. The signal 5-5-5 was rung while firefighters saluted the American flag.

The flag was raised to full staff for one minute to symbolize the resolve of this country, then lowered again to half staff where it remained for the rest of the day. David Godfrey offered a prayer to close out the service.

Evening of Remembrance on Fayetteville Street Mall
NBC-17 hosted an Evening of Remembrance in downtown Raleigh at 7pm. Two F-15s started the program off with an awesome fly-by, then the Golden Knights parachuted down and landed right on target, on the roof of the Convention Center.
