Firefighters from Apex were amongst those from several Wake, Chatham and Durham county departments that were dispatched for a brush fire near Highway 55 off Green Level Church Road. Extremely dry weather conditions gave the fire plenty of fuel. Thick smoke obscured drivers' vision on Highway 55 and flames threatened a nearby subdivision. The fire burned approximately 50 acres before it was brought under control that night.
