Structure Fire, Wimberly Road

15 March 2008

Apex firefighters were dispatched at 1742 on Saturday 3/15/08 to a structure fire on Wimberly Road. In the pouring down rain, first arriving crews reported heavy fire showing from the rear of a wood-frame house. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and after a tough battle were able to knock the fire down. A second crew deployed a 2.5" handline to the interior including the attic to help control the blaze. All occupants had escaped the fire and no injuries were reported.

Apex units that responded were E1, E2, E3, L1, Tanker 1, BC1, C1, and C5. We received mutual aid from Cary FD, Cary EMS, Wake County EMS, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Swift Creek, Fairview, Western Wake, Fuquay and Wake County SO (if I have forgotten anyone, please email me and let me know!) Mutual aid units assisted on scene, as well as covering our district for calls. Weather conditions made for extended overhaul and clean-up operations, and fire units were on scene until 2114.

Traffic control posed a problem initially, with a number of civilian vehicles getting in the way until Wake County Sheriffs deputies closed the road for the duration of the incident.
