LIVE BURN TRAINING

Barker Road

19 February 2005

The Apex Fire Department hosted a live burn training exercise on Barker Road, deep in our county district. The homeowner wanted to clear land to build a new house, and requested that the department burn down the existing house and barn. On Saturday, 19 February, firefighters set up operations with Engine 3 and Engine 2 drafting from two drop tanks, Tanker 1 running shuttle, and Engine 5 manning the water point. We also had SR-1 on the scene to fill SCBA bottles with its on-board cascade system. Despite the house being balloon-construction with a wide-open attic, we were able to get several hours of burns out of it before finally letting it go around 2:15p.

Special recognition and thanks to our Firebelles, who on short notice came through and provided our firefighters with lunch and refreshments. Joy Yates and Nancy Dawson were probably the most welcome sight of the afternoon, with their truck full of sandwiches, fruit, desserts and drinks.
