At 2:17 a.m. Sunday 31 March 2002, Engine 1, Engine 2, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Tanker 6, Tanker 8, Car 1, Car 2, Car 3 and Car 4 responded to reports of a structure fire on Old US 1. Car 3 arrived first on the scene to find the famous junkyard house fully involved. Holly Springs, Fairview and Chatham County were called for mutual aid tankers. An engine company from Swift Creek was asked to stand by at Station 1 to handle other calls in the district as we had nearly every piece of apparatus committed to the fire. Due to the magnitude of the blaze upon our arrival we initiated a defensive operation. At 3:30 a.m. the fire was under control.
