Eastern Emergency Services School
8 - 9 March 2003

Last Updated: 14 March 2003

Charlotte Fire Department's Battalion Chief Mike Wilson and David Thornburg (Engine 2) taught Advanced Truck Company Operations at the Eastern Emergency Services School held in Fayetteville in March 2003. Right next door, Captain Benny Clark (Engine 4) and Dave Gersdorff, a.k.a. Blue (Ladder 4), also both of the Charlotte Fire Department, taught Advanced Engine Company Operations. On Sunday, the two classes came together for a live burn at an acquired structure, where we were able to put to use everything we'd learned in the classroom.

Live Burn

One-story house, about 2200 square feet.

Plenty of wood to keep the stokers busy.

Ok, so I should have cleaned the camera lens!

Several rooms to navigate through

Spring Lake supplied the aerial apparatus

The outriggers on this truck can be deployed with a single push of a button. It auto-levels, lifting the wheels completely off the ground.

Eastover supplied the pumper

The guy that came with Cumberland County's mobile air unit stayed busy all day long filling bottles.

Two tankers (Stedman 2332 and Bethany 1221) stood by the whole day as well.

Howard (left) (Apex A-shift) was in the Advanced Engine Company Operations class.

During the pre-burn briefing, Blue introduces us to Singer, our unfortunate victim-to-be.

One engine company crew manned the attack line, one engine company crew manned the backup line.

One truck company crew did forcible entry, search & rescue, and ventilation, while a second truck company crew stood by as the RIT.

Preparing to make entry

Fire in the hole!

Chief Wilson holds a critique with the truck company crews after the first few evolutions

Rambo, my search and rescue partner. We saved Singer a couple of times!

Brian Pender, Ladder 1's crew leader

Captain Clark (instructor, Advanced Engine Company Operations), watches over the hoseline crews

Howard prepares to make entry with his crew

Stokers got this fire rolling in the side room

Attack crew, COME AND GET IT!

Backup crew stands ready

This crew is about to find out just how many layers of shingles there are on this old roof

Ventilation the good old-fashioned way

Chief Wilson positions the aerial to demonstrate ventilating from the platform

Chief Wilson supervises as this firefighter, ladder belt hooked into his partner's for support, cuts a ventilation hole with a chainsaw without ever leaving the safety of the platform.

Once the cuts are made, the roofing material can be removed with a few well-placed swings of the axe.

We finally let the house go around 2pm.

TRUCKIES!!!!!

By the end of this long day, Rambo'd had enough

Who brought da marshmallows?

There goes da roof!

Trying to cool things down...

Ok, someone's going to have to help me with names... Kevin, instructor David Thornburg, me, (who's behind me? email me!), Rambo, Brian Pender
