(Narrative by Jeff Silver)
Dinner was interrupted yet again for Apex's Bravest, this time for a working fire in a vacant log cabin. Firefighters were dispatched at 1919. Battalion 1, Engine 3 and Ladder 3 responded initially, and reported that smoke was visible from about 2 miles out. Car 1, Car 5 and Engine 1 also responded, along with mutual aid from Cary Fire Department. The house was approximately 2000 feet off the road, and heavily involved with partial collapse upon Apex's arrival. The resulting wind-swept brush fire was also spreading fast. Crews quickly went to work laying long hose stretches through heavy brush to reach the structure. The fire was marked under control at 19:51. Firefighters then had to overhaul and extinguish the deep-seated fire in the remains of the log cabin. They worked for over 2 hours before returning to service at 21:33. Coincidentally, training for that night was supposed to be "Hose Stretches & Water Supplies". It can be agreed by all who were there that we did plenty of hose stretching on this one!
