Anotonov An-225 "Mriya" at RDU International Airport

27 October 2006

Scott Criddle, one of our part-time staff, works full-time for Morrisville Fire Department. On Friday 10/27 during his shift there, they had the opportunity to go to the RDU Airport and see the world's largest aircraft.

The Antonov An-225 "Mriya" was designed for the transportation of the Russian Space Shuttle "Buran". With a wingspan of 290 feet, 32-wheel landing gear assembly, 6 massive jet engines, and a cargo area that can fit a complete assembled fuselage of a Boeing 737 (its maximum load is a whopping 275.5 tons), this must have been quite an impressive piece of machinery.
