Bob Gwyn, recently retired from the department after 29 years of dedicated service, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, 13 July 2004. In addition to volunteering for the fire department, Bob served in the US Air Force, was an associate professor at North Carolina State University, and a member of the Apex Baptist Church. Apex Fire Department members posted an honor guard at the casket throughout the visitations both at the Apex Funeral Home and Moody's Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. At the graveside service, Billy Gilbert and Chief Haraway presented the family with an American flag and a memorial fire helmet.
