NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Olive Chapel Village Shopping Center
5 August 2003

Updated: 14 August 2003

Apex law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies participated in the National Night Out event, a nation-wide public safety awareness and education effort, on Tuesday 5 August 2003. Citizens were invited to come out and meet emergency responders, and were treated to a wide variety of educational materials. The event drew quite a crowd before a quick-moving thunderstorm put an end to the festivities a few hours later.

APPARATUS ON DISPLAY
We had Engine 1 and our water rescue boat on display. Kids and parents alike enjoyed climbing into the truck and looking at our equipment.

INFORMATION TABLES
Apex Police, EMS and Fire Department had tables set up that were overflowing with pamphlets, photos, demonstrations, and freebies all related to public safety education. We had several brochures on fire prevention, free smoke detectors, reflective address signs, educational videos and slide show, and much more.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
Several local businesses sponsored a bean bag toss, ring throw, dunk-the-burglar (Apex dispatcher Shawn finally found an outfit that was appropriate for him..... heh, just kidding, Shawn!), and basketball freethrow. Citizens could also test their pitching arms with PD's radar gun clocking their speed.

DOUGHNUT EATING CONTEST
By far the MOST popular event of the evening was the doughnut-eating contest sponsored by the Apex Police Department. Young citizens pitted their Krispy Kreme-eating skills against the very best, Officer Gilbert, as the crowd cheered.
