The fall session of the North Carolina High Angle Rescue College, sponsored by OSFM, NCAR&EMS and Surry Community College, was held at Pilot Mountain in November 2004. Howard Miles, Ian Bass and I, having completed Level I at Stone Mountain last spring, were in Level II this time.
Ground school was held Friday night at Pilot Knob Fire Department. Several stations were set up where instructors reviewed all of the skills that we would be needing for the evolutions throughout the weekend.
Saturday and Sunday we had PERFECT weather - chilly in the 30's in the morning but with sunny blue skies it warmed up quite nicely on the rock. Level II students rotated through three practical stations - horizontal lowers, vertical lowers and low-slope evacuations. We put to use all of the skills we'd covered in Level I - except instead of playing with a mere 10-foot drop, we were dealing with about a 100-foot drop. Made the adrenaline flow a bit more freely!
I went so far this year as to try writing down a lot of peoples' names and departments - but it's still hard to keep track of them all. If I have mis-stated anyone's information in the photo pages, please email me and let me know so I can correct it!
