17th Annual
North Carolina State Fireman's Association
Conference

August 2004

Greensboro's Quint 10 and High Point's tiller did this year's flag display.

The 2004 State Fireman's Association Conference was held at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro in August. I visited on Saturday and caught the Vehicle Extrication Challenge and the Antique Fire Apparatus display.

High Point's Ladder 2 is an awesome-looking Pierce tiller

I also got a close look at Greensboro's Quint 10, a Sutphen mid-mount 105' platform.

Aerials, aerials, everywhere!

High Point's Ladder 2 really stole the show. Just to prove a point, these drivers maneuvered this monstrosity out of that curved space and made the sharp left turn without even blinking an eye or, for that matter, coming close to the curb!

Vehicle Extrication Challenge
I missed the first team, but got to see Greensboro Fire Department and Vienna Fire Department compete in the vehicle extrication challenge. Each team was presented with an identical scenario, and they had 25 minutes to perform the extrication. Judges watched all aspects of the operation with an eye for safety and skill.

Greensboro's team gets to work

In no time at all they had made a convertible

The "patient", a full-sized Rescue Randy mannequin, is guided onto the back board

Cleaning up

All the equipment was laid out for the teams ahead of time

Guilford County EMS stood by throughout the competition

An identical scenario for the next team

And they're off! Vienna Fire Department members assess their scene.

Patient care is key - a firefighter immediately crawls in the back to perform c-spine stabilization and both he and the patient are covered with a protective tarp.

Firefighters secured the two cars together with a ratchet strap for safety

Discussing the next steps...

DeWalt provided a lot of the equipment

This firefighter made quick work of the a-, b- and c-posts with the o-cutter.

Instant pop-top!

Ready to remove the patient

Another successful extrication!
