In August 2008, the Apex Fire Department hired six full-time firefighters. For the first time ever, the department hosted a week-long recruit academy before releasing the new hires to their assigned shifts. The firefighters took care of administrative tasks, went through bloodborne pathogens, respirator fit-testing, and got plenty of basic hands-on training throughout the week, to familiarize them with Apex Fire Department operations and equipment.
