LIVE BURN

Garris Road, New Hill

July 19, 2008

The Apex FD was given access to an old house in New Hill to use for training. Over several weeks, firefighters got some good hands-on experience with live burn evolutions, culminating in an all-day affair on Saturday 7/19/08. That weekend, several Morrisville firefighters joined in the fun and all the crews got to do some scenarios before we finally let the house burn to the ground in the afternoon. Near-90F temperatures and high humidity made for quite the steamy situation, but several of our newest members did get to cool off in our above-ground "swimming pool" after training (involuntarily, but that's beside the point).

Lead instructors were Battalion Chief Carter, Captain Chris Dawson, and Chief Mark Haraway

Engine 1 supplied the backup line

Engine 4 supplied the attack line, drafting from the drop tank

Morrisville firefighters Philip Farland, Chris Meeks

We had one attack line and one backup line for interior operations, as well as one safety line on the exterior on each side of the house

Apex firefighters did a lot of work to prepare the house prior to the live burns - like putting up sheetrock....

.... building a burn bin in each room....

.... and putting graffiti!

We burned in this back room on previous training nights

Apex EMS stood by the entire day. They monitored everyone's vitals and assisted with rehab.

This little guy came to hang out with us every time we trained at the house

He quickly became my little buddy (no doubt in the hopes that I had something good for him to eat)

It didn't take long after training was over for the games to begin....

Scooter's .5 was the first to get thrown in the drink. He boldly taunts Thomas - after all, he's already wet, what does he have to lose!

Melissa was the next one to go - kicking and screaming as they pried her off the fire truck

SPLOOSH!

Hillen didn't escape soon enough....

....and neither did Tony

Arnett, however, put up a fight and managed to stay dry..... THIS time.
