A couple Apex firefighters were amongst the instructors for the Franklin County Rookie Academy in May 2010. The second of two weekends is held at the Wake County Fire Training Center in New Hill, where students are introduced to live fire for the first time using the various LP gas props and the burn building.

Firefighters learn basic hose handling skills at the Christmas tree prop

They also learn how to approach an LP tank

The pressure relief valve on the LP tank can make for quite an impressive fire, especially for folks who have never seen it before

At the LP tank we run two attack lines and one safety line

Firefighters widen their attack patterns as they approach the tank for maximum protection

With a full fog pattern, crews can get right next to the tank

We even had a visitor, this guy was camped out under the control shack near the burn building.
