The first weekend of the Summer 2011 Essentials of Firefighting Academy proceeded at the Wake County Fire Training Center despite Hurricane Irene. Amidst scattered showers and wind gusts, 25 firefighters representing Wake, Johnston and Harnett counties learned the basics of PPE, hose handling, ladders and search, and got their first taste of live fire in the burn building.
The second weekend, 22 rookies were awarded certificates and t-shirts for completing the school. It was rather fitting on this day, 9/11/11, to be letting loose some of the next generation of firefighters.
