The Western Carolina Fire and Rescue College was held the first weekend of August as it always is, at the Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville. I joined ten other students representing Alamance, Alexander, Dare, Henderson, Martin, Rowan, Transylvania, Wake, and Watauga Counties in the Cell Tower Rescue Class, headed by instructors Joe Burris and Richard Caudill.
At about 60 feet, the tower we worked on in this class was not nearly as tall as others we had in previous classes which were well over 100 feet high. However, everyone got plenty of great hands-on experience with a wide variety of evolutions, from ground-based and tower-based operations, harness and stokes basket lowers, and even a jib-arm scenario!
