Tokyo Fire Department, Japan

Marunouchi Fire Station

Back to "Fire Departments Around the World"

My family and I made another trip back to Japan in March 2010. This time with my own broken Japanese (and my mom and dad as translators!) I was able to chat with the Captain and a couple of the firefighters at the Tokyo Fire Department headquarters in Marunouchi. Pictured are, left to right, Captain Hiroyuki Furusato, Yusuke Aida, myself, and Tajima (apologies, I did not get the full name!)

Tokyo's Marunouchi Fire Station is located across the street from the Imperial Palace

As luck would have it, the crews were outside doing aerial training when we arrived

They were practicing laddering the station building

One of their pumpers

Incredibly clean compartments!

I recognize the characters for "Tokyo" and "Fire" - but beyond that I'm lost!

I liked the way everything was strapped into place.

Tight fit in this cab!

They even have their very own heavy-vehicle tow truck!

Back down to the ground floor!

Spanner wrenches are slightly different from ours

Mom and Dad

According to my dad, these are ten tenets for safety - I'm working on getting a translation :)

Mom and Dad thank Captain Furusato for spending time with us and allowing us to tour their station

All the trucks back in the house

Across the street, I got a glimpse of one of the Imperial Palace fire trucks as it headed back to its station on the palace grounds

Just like here, Japanese kids love fire trucks - they're not visible in this photo but just off to the right there was a small crowd of them waving and calling after the truck as it passed by.
