Back to "Fire Departments Around the World"
David and I spent a week in May 2002 wandering around the deserts and mountains of the Southwestern US. On the first day of our trip, we traveled west of Las Vegas into Pahrump, Nevada. We just happened across the fire station and of course we had to stop. The crew that was on duty was kind enough to show us around and chat for awhile. They have a combination department, and in 2001 they ran over 5,000 calls. Like us, a large percentage of their calls are medical in nature. They face some challenges, though, in that their district is extremely spread out. In addition, the closest hospital is in Las Vegas, over an hour's drive away. They utilize helicopter transport much more frequently than we do as a result.
