Station 1 on Howard Street is home to some of the busiest companies in the country. Engine 1, Truck 1, Squad 1 and Medic 1 are housed here, but very rarely does one find all four trucks in the house at once. I had one such opportunity mid-week, and had a short time to snap a few photos before the bell went off again and they were out the door.

Truck 1 was way too long to fit into my photo frame without a wide-angle lens!

It would have been impossible to get a standard aerial truck through some of the narrow city streets.

A LONG way from back to front!

San Francisco is famous for its cable cars and trolleys, and its streets are criss-crossed every which way with a tangled mess of overhead wires. Hence their standard cache includes wooden ladders, something we don't see around here very much.

An appropriate moniker!

Somehow their pole seemed much higher than ours...

This is the way one usually finds the bays at Station 1 - that is - EMPTY!

It took several visits before i finally got this shot - with Engine 1, Truck 1, Medic 1 - and Squad 1 (not visible) all in the house at once!

Couldn't resist a photo op!

The guys that ride the squad are the jacks of all trades - they get called out when the going gets rough. And how many calls is that for Squad 1 alone? As one of them put it, "Oh, only about 10 a day." ONLY 10 a day?!

The unmistakable profile of an American LaFrance

Someone had a sense of humor - or was that a real one?

These guys run paramedic firefighters - a necessity given the call volume no doubt!
