San Francisco Fire Department |

In March 2005 I tagged along with my husband to San Francisco where he was attending a conference. Being the fire geek that I am, while he toiled away at work all day I spent my time visiting the local firehouses.
From our high-rise hotel room smack in the midst of downtown (yes, I broke my cardinal rule of not staying on a floor higher than a ladder truck could reach!), we were just around the corner from Station 1, giving us a perfect bird's-eye view of the constant, and I mean CONSTANT, parade of fire trucks and ambulances as they ran call after call after call.
In one day, I got more than my share of exercise. First I visited Station 1 on Howard Street, then walked to Station 8 on Bluxome Street. From there I hoofed it all the way to the Bay Bridge and got a close look at the city's two fire boats at Station 35 on Pier 22.
Thanks to all the firefighters and paramedics who took a few minutes out of their busy days to show me around and let me get a few pictures.
