San Jose Fire Department

Station 1, North Market Street

Back to "Fire Departments Around the World"

I last visited the Bay Area in March 2000. The guys at Station 1 downtown were great, they took the time to show me around and even took me for a spin around the city in their aerial truck! As of 1995-6, the San Jose Fire Department had 30 stations and 769 paid personnel to protect a district of over 200 square miles with a population of 940,000.

San Jose Fire Department Station 1 on North Market Street downtown. This station has and engine company, a truck company, a brush patrol unit and a battalion chief. In 1998-9, they ran over 3,000 EMS calls and over 3,200 fire and other calls.

I immediately fell in love with, of course, Truck 1, an 85 foot platform. I almost got to ride along with them on a fire alarm too, but like most of ours here, they were 10-22'd before they could even get all the way out of the station. Oh well, maybe next time!
