City of Santa Clara Fire Department

Station 2, Walsh Avenue

Back to "Fire Departments Around the World"

In January 2007, work (that is, for Cisco Systems) brought me back out to California for about a week. Though the days were packed with business meetings, I was able to sneak out one night and make a quick visit to the City of Santa Clara Fire Department's Station 2 / Training Center complex on Walsh Avenue. Despite my arriving unannounced, one of the firefighters working that evening took a few minutes to give me a tour of the station and talk to me about their operations.

The City of Santa Clara covers an area of 19.3 square miles and has a night-time population of 110,000, which swells to over 135,000 during the day. As of 2004/2005, they had 10 stations with 176 paid personnel, and ran over 9300 incidents (includes emergency and non-emergency) in 2004. The corporate limits of the Town of Apex encompass about 12 square miles with a population of about 30,000. Comparing population densities, Santa Clara's is approximately 5700 / sq mi while Apex's is around 2500 / sq mi!

A piece of history

I liked their podium in the training room

Station 2 has a truck company...

... a heavy rescue...

... and a pumper. Marcel (I hope I remembered his name correctly!) was the one who gave me the grand tour.
